Аннотация: Urbanization is a multifaceted phenomenon from the social point of view. On the one hand, the city as a special form of socio-geographical and socio-cultural space organization is a factor in the progressive development of society. On the other hand, the urban processes have a negative impact on the quality of urban environment. As the rate of urbanization increases, the quality of life in the largest cities depends on the degree of natural environment protection. On the basis of statistical data, we consider the main factors of urban processes in the Baikal region. We distinguished the role of geodemographic factors in the transformation of urbanization and investigated the quality of life of the urban population in the Baikal region. The demographic and ecological aspects of the quality of life are illustrated by the example of regional centers (Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude, and Chita).
